History of Ragdolls

The breed began in the 1960s by the late Ann Bake of California. A white Persian or Angora type cat named Josephine mated with a sacred cat of Birman cat. It was said that Josephine was a free roaming cat. At the time Ann Baker had been borrowing Josephine’s older son to sire to her black Persian. He looked like a black Persian named Blackie. She then saw Blackie’s brother that looked like a Sacred Cat of Burma, and named him Raggedy Ann Daddy Warbucks. She also used him to sire.

Ragdoll Description

They are a beautiful cat. They are relaxed, very loving, playful and quiet. Because they adapt well to the indoors, they make a great house or apartment cat. A Ragdoll should never be outdoors. You can easily leash train them, but it is wise to keep them inside.

Ragdolls are slow to mature. Two to four years for full maturity (color and weight). Females can weigh up to 15lbs. but not unusual to weigh more. Males up to 20lbs. but not unusual to weigh more. They have beautiful blue eyes. Their fur is long, and feels as soft as a rabbits. Very little shedding in the spring and fall.

  • Bi-color: Defined in the darker color is the ears, mask and tail. The mask is an inverted “V”.

Buy a Kitten

When purchaisng a kitten, make sure the price should reflect that it is a full bred kitten. If you find a breeder asking a lot lower than the other breeders, ask why. For example, they may be asking for a lower price thinking that you will over look the condition of the kitten.

Never buy a kitten without a health contract and guarantee.

Ragdolls are by nature a friendly cat, so make sure they aren’t isolated, afraid or nervous. If you visit a cattery some times the breeder cat doesn’t look as great as one that is spayed or neutered. After they have kittens the breeder will start looking good again.

Buying from a smaller breeder you may have to wait, but the wait is well worth it. Remember, when buying from a large breeder, they will have kittens all the time but no time to spend with the kittens.

What to Have Before You Bring a Kitten Home

  • Litterbox: Buy large.
  • Food Dishes: Not plastic.
  • Cat Carrier: Medium size. You should always use a cat carrier when taking your cat any where.
  • Kitten Proof Your Home: Watch out for houseplants, some can be poisonous.
  • Cat Scratcher/Furniture
  • Toys: They love small and lightweight toys to carry in their mouths. Ragdolls want to fetch, easily. A Bird is a stick with feathers on the end (be careful that they don’t get the string around their neck).
